Lyon, France - 2012

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 15/09/2012 00:35:03

I arrived at Lyon quite late - it was a six hour drive from Nice (including a quick stop at Avignon for lunch) and very tiring. Of course - my Lyon hotel is amazing, and I'll only be spending a short time in it. It's been pot luck with the hotels, I booked them so long ago I forget which ones were fancy and which ones were not. I was perfectly situated in between the two rivers of Lyon and very close to everything I wanted to see.

Hotel
A nice view for Ducky Poos - or a cruel one, depending on how you look at it

I went to see as much of Lyon as I could that night, mainly in the Vieux Lyon area (Old Lyon). Lots of pretty sights, but the one that most caught my eye was the old Roman Theatre. They certainly built venues to last in those days - it still looks better than some venues I've enjoyed shows at in Melbourne. I guess I arrived kind of late, but there was only like 4 people in the vicinity of the forum - amazing how such an incredible example of our past can be enjoyed on one's own. I checked out the viewing angles, did a little tap dance on stage and went back into the city for dinner.

Theatre
The Roman Theatre in Lyon was surprisingly similar to the open air venue from Prague

My original planned venue for dinner was closed, so I went to the place across the street which looked nice enough. They served a bunch of different seafood dishes (which I didn't feel like) or frog's legs. With apologies to Kermit, I figured why not and gave fried frogs legs a go. They were actually really nice, especially with a squirt of lemon juice. They were a little annoying to eat (a small amount of meat on each bone) but very tender and delicious. To complete the picture I had some "French" fries with mayo, red wine and crepes (or thin pancakes if you would) for dessert. Ah oui oui, poo poo.

Food
I tried to grow a dirty moustache during my meal but the waitress said I'd reached the limit of French stereotypes for the day

Ear
Is it just me, or does it look like one brother is whispering "You complete me" to the other?

Poster
In a bid to boost the early box office numbers the Lumiere brothers would sit amongst the crowd and pretend their top hats were another paying customer

After a couple of riveting 50 second movies I got back into my car and left for Dijon. I know I didn't do Lyon justice and there's a lot more to the city than I experienced, but I feel that I did as good as I could with the limited time budget afforded to me.
