Street Fighter: The Later Years

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 05/11/2008 20:25:40

If you're a fan of the old school Street Fighter series of games you may get a kick out of a College Humor video series entitled Street Fighter: The Later Years.

Pretty funny, a nice walk down memory lane and surprisingly good production values considering. Here's the first episode:

Street Fighter: The Later Years

It's a series of 9 short episodes, so it's worth watching a couple so you can see your favourite character.

Timmy didn't think about the Mini-Feed

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 27/08/2008 21:01:43

Actual screenshot of one of my Facebook friend's Mini-Feed (I've changed the names to "Timmy" to protect the horny):

Mini Feed

Either my 15-year-old self borrowed Timmy's PC when he wasn't looking - or Timmy was bored a few nights ago and went trawling for Facebook funbags.

I must say, Fan de Big Tits does sound like a fun group.

People from Brisbane like reading about sex

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 26/07/2008 14:49:39

(news at 11)

I scan the news headlines each day at The Age's website. After doing a quick scan of the headlines from the homepage, I've recently started scrolling to the bottom of the page each day to check the "Readers' most viewed" links. Each day the top 5 viewed news stories are linked, from 4 different newspapers (The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, WA today and the Brisbane Times).

Since doing this, I've noticed something peculiar about the top 1 or 2 articles for the Brisbane Times' readership. I've taken a screen shot of 5 days in a row - and only left in articles from the Melbourne and Brisbane based newspapers. See if you can spot the pattern:

Monday
Day 1

Tuesday
Day 2

Wednesday
Day 3

Thursday
Day 4

Friday
Day 5

Admittedly, the week I chose may have been rigged - as Big Brother is filmed at Dreamworld (Queensland) - and large-breasted housemates Bianca and Brigitte were evicted in that week. But that doesn't explain their two-day fascination with corpse-sex.

I did read the article about sex being used as a punishment for shoplifting - but it turns out the only people being punished were females. Guess I'll keep stealing my copies of Zoo Weekly elsewhere.

Garfield minus Garfield

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 11/04/2008 21:43:47
Updated by Joel Dixon at 12/04/2008 00:26:11

The Internet is a wonderful place. Sure, there's plenty of downsides, but at times it appears that we've discovered the proverbial thousand monkeys on a thousand typewriters. Amongst all of the internet crap - there's a heap of gems, like Garfield minus Garfield. From the site:

Quote:
Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb.

Basically he photoshops Garfield out of the Garfield comics and it turns into a hilarious comic about a crazy Jon. I browsed the site and he has picked some very funny ones - exhibit A.

Anyway, on the train home the other night I picked up a copy of the Herald Sun and flicked through to the comic section. Sure enough - the comic I saw was another example of a good Garfield minus Garfield so I got Bell to photoshop it up for me. When you mouse over the image it will be replaced with the original comic (give it a second to load), or if you don't have Javascript enabled you can just click it.

Check out the site - don't let the monkey's work be in vein!

Drugs are bad, mmm'kay?

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 02/11/2007 14:12:42

While I'm admittedly a goody-two-shoes when it comes to illicit drug usage, for some reason I find drug culture incredibly fascinating.

After watching (and loving) Trainspotting I really got into reading Irvine Welsh's back catalog. Some of his other novels such as Marabou Stork Nightmares, Glue and Porno feature many elements of drug culture in well developed working-class Scottish characters.

I also enjoyed Kevin Smith's series of blog posts discussing Jason Mewes' battle with drug addiction. It seems Kevin's turned part of his site into a book so the posts have been removed, so you'll just have to believe me. Thankfully I haven't had somebody so close to me dealing with a drug problem, so these posts provided an interesting insight.

If I didn't have an understanding of the potential negative effects of consistent drug use - the Drug Free website's "Faces of Meth" campaign would certainly help. They say a picture's worth a thousand words, in this case two pictures are worth two thousand:

Meth use
There's less than 5 years between these two photos - but plenty of Methamphetamine use

Phone Pontificating

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 12/10/2007 10:11:56
Updated by Joel Dixon at 17/02/2008 14:48:42

My current phone is a Nokia 6230:

Nokia 6230
I have mine set to English though

As a phone it's met all of my needs well: MP3 ring tones, basic internet surfing, decent calendar (compared to my last phone) and it's one of the few camera phones that lets you turn off the shutter sound effects (useful for silent up-skirting). The ol' 6230 was also the subject of the 7th entry on this blog.

I've had the phone for just over 3 years, which is a long time for me (the one before this lasted just over 1 year before I upgraded) - but unfortunately I think time's running out. As a phone (for making calls) - it's still perfect for me, but the screen size is too small for Internet use and the built-in calendar can't be synched.

I've been taking an interest in phones again over the last month or so - and have come up with a few alternatives. I have no idea what to choose though

New Phone - Nokia N95

Nokia N95

The Nokia N95 has received goodish reviews pretty much all the features I want including WiFi and GPS. Unfortunately runs the "Nokia Web Browser" and the screen isn't as big as I'd like.

Huge Phone - Nokia E90

Nokia E90

The Nokia E90 is part of the Communicator brand - and is tailored to business users, but offers WiFi, a range of 3rd-party apps and a gigantically wide screen. The price tag is a big downer at the moment - and the size / weight might be an issue.

Cool Phone - Apple iPhone

iPhone

I'm not really cool enough to own one of the iPhones, but it sure is hawt. It has a Safari browser, some Google inter operation (maps and video) and apparently it's an ok MP3 player (I still love my iPod). Again, price tag is pretty large - and the phone isn't "open" enough for me.

Not a Phone - Nokia N800

Nokia N800

When reviewing phones the Nokia N800 was perfect for me. Nice sized screen, WiFi, Opera browser (and a Mozilla browser available too) and it cost around $400. The only problem is that it isn't actually phone, it's just an Internet Tablet. But I guess I can just keep my phone as a phone - and use the tablet for anything internet related. This one bears further investigation.

Goo Phone

Google Phone

Another one I've been watching for a while, apparently Google are working on a mobile-based operating system and trying to get phone companies to put it on their phones. Rumors and "leaks" are all over the web, but nothing concrete has materialised. This would be great for me (as I use Google software for mail, calendar, RSS reading, instant messaging, online documents etc) - and Google generally do things well. I just don't know how much longer I can hold out for this one.

Geek Phone

OpenMoko

This one is very interesting, OpenMoko is a completely open-source operating system (using free software) for phones. Hardware manufacturer FIC have created the Neo1973 which is due to be released this year. With the open-source community behind it - you know it's going to have 3rd-party offerings, and you know it's going to be patched frequently! Not sure if I want my phone to me a proverbial version 0.1 - but it's another phone I'll be keeping my eye on.

Of course - it's possible I'll just purchase the next Banana Phone I see:

It's Funny, laugh

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 10/10/2007 05:30:36

Some of the videos in this post contain profanities

You may have noticed that I've changed my generic subtitle line from "I still doubt that I will post here much" to my original intention of random quotes. They're not so random at the moment, as there's about 40 in total - and they've been selected from the limited source of The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy and some Saturday Night Live sketches.

If you've yet to experience Saturday Night Live's Celebrity Jeopardy, I highly recommend you download legally purchase all of the videos, and laugh hysterically. Here's a YouTube compilation video that explains the concept and fits in most of the favourite jokes (except for my personal favourite):

Celebrity Jeopardy!

In another seamless segue, Jeopardy also features in one of my all-time favorite Jerky Boys prank calls (of which there is a lot) - Testing for Jeopardy:

Testing for Jeopardy!

I got into the Jerky Boys during high school, when some friends and I stumbled on the universally-panned feature movie The Jerky Boys. The movie may have been pretty bad, but we loved it. When we found out that they had better stuff on CD - we loved that even more. As soon as I get some extra time I will be adding some Jerky Boys quotes to the site.

Another part-time prank caller (very weak link, I know) is Matt Besser from the Upright Citizens Brigade. A friend from work put me onto the Upright Citizen's Brigade, an improv comedy group originating in Chicago in the early 90's. I'm more familiar with the three seasons of television that they created (based on sketches from the live show) - of which season two is on sale now. UCB is hit-and-miss comedy, so some cause a bit of head-scratching. But these two don't (or maybe they do):

Little Donny

Little Donny is a child that has the disability of being unaware of his enormous penis. This video is The Little Donny Foundation's version of a "Do They Know It's Christmas" style song. The people on the street were asked to sing "enormous peanuts", and the reason Donny is crying in the end is because Tuvok was unable to find his way home in Star Trek.

Astronauts

UCB also have an irrational hatred of astronauts

The UCB crew also founded a Theatre which plays host to a number of improv and sketch comedy groups, including some of the members from Derrick Comedy. Derrick Comedy aren't enormously popular, and are also very hit-and-miss, but I find most of the videos on their site amusing. They've also done a few "rejected TV theme songs".

Mafia

Keyboard Kid

Stick with it - gets funnier after a minute or so

Daughters

There's also some less tasteful ones - so I won't embed them - but provide links (don't say I didn't warn you). Of course, I find the distasteful ones some of the funniest:

Memory Loss - A slightly different version of Memento!
Bad BJ Girl - she's got it a little wrong
Bro Rape - a special report on "Bro Rape"
The Cool Breeze - not necessarily distasteful - but I figured it wasn't worth an embedding
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Theme - Again, not disturbing - but weird!

I think I've linked enough of the clips - if you still don't like their comedy - I doubt I can persuade you! Enjoy (I hope).

Updated by Joel Dixon at 06/10/2007 17:47:47 - fixed up some bad typos

Weather related delays meant I left Calgary at 8:30 pm instead of 6:30 pm - so I'm pretty over it!

To amuse yourselves, please view this YouTube video on Dice Stacking that my younger brother sent me.

Also, have a quick look at the related videos. It just reminds me that some people have mad skillz, and I don't!

Crazy like a theremin-playing robot

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 21/09/2007 15:27:06

Funny how things go full circle.

I was updating my contact me page for this site this evening, when I found an old text file that contained an idea for a blog post I had ages ago. The idea was to describe my linking travels on Wikipedia. Put in a search term, read through the article, click on an interesting link - and see where it gets you.

An example of this was when I was watching the Scrubs DVDs with Belinda, I saw an episode which featured The Polyphonic Spree.

The Polyphonic Spree
The Polyphonic Spree

Mini Polyphonic Spree
The mini Polyphonic Spree

I was first made aware of The Polyphonic Spree from an Excel-based Minipops quiz - in which they were the only 25-person group wearing white robes with colourful leggings. I didn't think too much about them after this until I saw them in the afore-mentioned Scrubs episode playing "Light and Day / Reach For the Sun", and I quite enjoyed the song. Upon researching the band, as well as the fact that they've now diversified their robe design, I discovered that one of their 25 members is a theremin player.

Theremin
This is such an awesome picture in so many ways!

The theremin is very difficult to play - the first instrument designed to be operated without touching it. The musician controls the pitch and volume by waving their hands around the two antennas - to varying effects (and sounds). It's probably more of a novelty instrument - but does appear in popular music from time to time (such as in Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love).

The circle was complete when the next DVDs Bell and I started watching was the final series of Futurama, which involved another hard-to-play futuristic instrument: the Holophonor. The DVD commentary also included a mention to the theremin as another hard to play instrument.

The Grumpy Snail

So that was my original blog post idea, which was discarded probably due to laziness instead of quality control. A few hours after reading this old blog post idea this evening - I come across the following video in one of my feeds:

Robot playing Crazy

To summarise, this guy has a series of robots playing Gnarls Barkley's Crazy on a series of different "instruments". They play the song using a MIDI file as input (MIDI files contain separate tracks for each instrument in the music). I hope you noticed one of them is playing a theremin!
