Ueno (Tokyo), Japan - 2015

# Posted by Joel Dixon at 31/03/2015 13:04:04

Our first taste of Tokyo was returning to Ueno train station from Nikko and wandering through a hive of activity at Ueno park. The Cherry Blossoms were just starting to live up to their name as colour filled most available space above head height (below head height was all people-filled). As well as the cherry blossoms, I wanted to visit the statue of Saigo Takamori - the samaurai that was influentual during the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877 (I think he also played opposite Tom Cruise in The Last Samaurai). I especially enjoyed the statue because of the pose chosen for this Saigo - out taking his dog for a walk. Do you think he collected the droppings that his puppy left? Probably not (unless that's what the sword was for).

Blooming
The first - of what I am sure will be many - cherry blossom photo

Saigo Takamori out walking his dog, with sword presumably in-case of ninja attack

After checking out the park we headed down to the hustling Ameyayokocho market with a whole bunch of other people. I bought myself a coin wallet (which I feel suitably un-manly about - next up is a man-purse I guess) and we grabbed some of the street food dango (grilled rice dumplings with sauce - not too bad). Walking along the main road we headed towards Kappabashi Street which is part of the kitchen district - frequented by restaurant owners to buy furniture, crockery, decorations and anything else needed to supply me with delicious eats. The main reason we went here was to check out the Maizuru sample store.

Popular
We weren't the only toursits that found the concept of a sample store interesting

I've loved seeing plastic samples of the food we are able to eat outside some of the Nikko restaurants - I had wondered where all the samples were coming from. Turns out people head to stores such as Maizuru - hopefully with a butt-load of cash as some of the examples of a life-sized fish were more than $400 each! Apparently less and less restaurants are providing samples and it kind of showed as Maizuru seemed to concentrate more on the small tourist-friendly samples (such as key rings or magnets) at a slightly more reasonable price.

Bowls
They all look so delicious, though certainly a little chewy

Not So Creamy
Some tourist-friendly samples. I tried paying with Monopoly money - but I don't think they appreciated my attempt at humour

Much like when I was in Barcelona, a normal day-by-day narrative will be difficult to provide due to our criss-crossing between the areas of Tokyo. So this post covers most of the activities we enjoyed while in Ueno - in other words - stay tuned for more Tokyo fun
