I've been getting a heap of spam comments on my most recent blog post - so I hope that adding a new blog keeps the spammers at bay (if only they knew how small and stingy my readership is).

I've wanted to have an online catalogue of my DVDs and CDs for a while now - mainly so I could answer such important questions as "shit, I know I've seen that guy in something before, what was it?". Some could (and did) suggest that IMDb satisfies this requirement and they would be right. Then I remembered the other reason I have - to stop buying doubles of things at JB Hi-Fi. It is now much easier to check if I already have a certain DVD via my phone while at the "crazy discounts" bin.

I also wanted to pay more attention to writers and directors of films - to better predict whether I would like a new release.

Anywho - I finished it months ago and have filled it with my Movies, TV Shows and Music. I also have Video Games, but haven't been bothered enough to catalogue them all yet.

As usual, I love an elegant URL, so each item or section tries to do away with query strings or arbitrary IDs - which actually took a bit of effort. For example:

All movies: http://www.joeldixon.com/catalogue/movies/

All movies released in 2008: http://www.joeldixon.com/catalogue/movies/2008/

Movies with a genre of romance sorted by my rating: http://www.joeldixon.com/catalogue/movies/genre/romance/sort /rating/

I also calculate some stats (which I hope to expand at some point).

Sure, there's probably an online tool that already does this kind of thing, but certainly not with such attractive and functional URLs!

I made a DVD list for the same reason and just last week bought The Green Mile on Blu-ray before realising I already had it.

So just make sure you do actually check your list before you make purchases. :S

What would your URL system do if you happened to own two movies called Alice in Wonderland from 1985? /1985/alice-in-wonderland-2?

Also: I still have to give you your DVD of Full Metal Jacket.

ha ha - I didn't mention that I bought two copies of Lock, Stock after the creation of this catalogue (my phone couldn't connect to the 'net while I was in the store - at least I did try ).

Good question - has that actually happened (two titles in the same year)? I'm guessing it probably has - but do you have an example (is Alice in Wonderland from 1985 an example? I can only find one on IMDb)?

But yeah - the "page name" of the item (in this case alice-in-wonderland) is just a cleaned up version of the item's title (lower case, spaces to dashes etc). If I had two with the same year and page name - I'd just have to change one of the page names to something different. If I've bought two items with the same name and release year, I would presumably know some difference between the two and add that to the page name (/1985/alice-in-wonderland-animated/).

Now that I re-think - this could also happen if I bought anything on Blu-ray (which I don't) as well as owning the DVD. In that case - I could either add -bluray to the end of one of the page names - or, because the items are pretty much the same (same director, actors, genre etc), keep them both under the one record. I currently have "format" which I set to DVD or CD or CD + DVD etc. I would either add a "DVD + Blu-ray" option for this drop-down - or allow you to select more than one format for each item. I guess when I eventually surrender to Blu-ray this will need a re-think.

Also: Cool - are you seeing Mum this weekend? Or Grace tomorrow night? I will be present at both suggestions.
